Project 01 — Illustration Series

Homeward Bound

White gables, a heavy canopy and one pink cloud — a cover series about the last ten minutes of the day.

Overview

Copper Journal asked for five covers on a single theme: the walk home. This is the first — and the one that set the visual rules for the rest.

The composition keeps everything low and calm. Three white houses sit shoulder to shoulder while a single dark canopy presses down from the top of the frame, the way evening does. Two small red dots — a distant brake light, a doorbell — are the only things still awake.

Approach

The studio walked the same three streets for a week at 6pm, sketching rooflines from bus stops. Back in the studio, twenty thumbnails became three directions, and the quietest one won: no people, no cars, just houses holding their breath.

Colour does the storytelling. A working blue sky cools into navy shadow, and the pink cloud at the base is the last of the sunset, refusing to leave. Everything is drawn as flat interlocking planes so the series reproduces crisply from newsstand cover to phone screen.
