Project 05 — Infrastructure Art
Steel & Sky
Girders crossing a coral evening — public art for two years of roadworks.
Overview
Harbour Works had a problem: a two-year bridge build and a neighbourhood tired of looking at it. The studio was asked to make the hoardings worth stopping for.
Steel & Sky turns the construction itself into the subject — black trusses and steel-blue girders drawn with the same care as finished architecture, set against an unapologetic coral sky. Forty metres of hoarding, six site gates and a site newspaper all carry the system.
Approach
The studio spent three days on the viewing platform with the engineers' drawings, learning which diagonal carries weight and which one just looks good. The illustration keeps the real structure honest — every truss in the drawing exists on site.
Coral was chosen because nothing on a building site is coral. Against hi-vis yellow and grey steel, the hoardings read as deliberate art rather than camouflage, and the cream edge lines keep the heavy diagonals legible in rain and low sun.
